The old manor was massive, seemingly abandoned, and covered in vines. It looked to be in great disrepair, even collapsed inward in some parts. Could her missing person really be hiding here? Of all places? It didn't seem possible.
Living in a small village in a little home by herself, Jessica took on mysterious cases for the people who lived there, or in nearby towns. They knew she was a good detective, and she was strong... some called her a witch, but others swore by her methods after she brought back their loved ones safe and sound. This time she'd been sent to find another lost person who had last been seen heading into the 'forbidden' woods, so called because few people ever returned from that very treeline.
She was wondering if this might have been some sort of prank when the howling of wolves caught her ear. She might be strong, but she couldn't take on a pack of wolves by herself.
Jessica quickly pushed open the manor's front gate and shut it behind her just in time to avoid sharp, snapping teeth. Heart racing, she sprinted for the front doors and shoved them open, tripping her way inside. With those closed behind her, it was dark and eerily silent.
Things were never as wonderful as they seemed and for the so-called perfect fair town settled around them, it rang very true with all the secrets rattling around it, hidden in the pockets of darkness. More than a few skeletons were in the closet so to speak but some weren't staying hidden any longer. Case and point? One Bucky Barnes, who managed to escape and flee to the forbidden forest, a safe zone of sorts for all the misfits. No one of a sound mind and decent life ever wandered into the den of unspeakable nightmares but what choice did Bucky really have?
For days, he wandered through the trees, surviving on pooled water in leaves when it rained and other things he didn't like thinking about too long. All the while trying to ignore his appearance. He managed to leave before they shifted him completely but the scars were grotesque and they had ripped off one of his arms completely.
Eventually, he came across a crumbling manor and made it his solitary home but the peace did not last. The place seemed haunted but the current voice spunded human enough. Actually present human.
Creeping out of the room, he stuck to the shadows but called out, "who are you? What are you doing here?"
Jessica startled when someone actually called back to her. Though she had wondered whether someone could be hiding out here, she hadn't really expected it. Not in such a dark, lonely place.
"My name's Jessica. I'm looking for someone," she replied, tentatively stepping toward the shadows.
Oh, she wanted to be careful, but at the same time, felt confident enough in her abilities to fight off whoever might attack (save the pack of wolves).
"Who are you?" She asked, trying to keep her tone relatively soft, so as not to scare away this person. He might be able to help her, after all.
A woman in the run down castle would only be a complication but he couldn't very well just toss her out and be done with it, especially not when she looked so lost. He did always have a soft spot for the lost ones. Letting out a sigh, he stepped a little further back into the shadows to keep her far enough away from him.
"Who I used to be doesn't matter now. This is all I am." A state he tried to force himself to accept every day and he knew all too well what would happen if others happened to find him.
"You can stay the night and be gone in the morning to return to the village. The forests are not safe."
