Just before sunset, Sam found himself in the underground passageway T'Challa had shown him, surrounded by entirely human Dora Milaje. While he had thought all of the king's bodyguards would be shifters, it made sense to have humans as well - if nothing else, both king and bodyguards would be vulnerable during the change itself. These women were clearly more than prepared for it; the blades of their spears appeared to be a silver and vibranium alloy, and they were pointed at Sam.

Sam fell to the floor as the change overtook him. The Dora Milaje backed away slightly, still ready to strike if he turned on them. They had been friendly enough to him before they had known his secret, but now, they were entirely hostile. Sam whined deep in his throat, sounding more like a dog than a wolf, and curled up to wait for the king, licking his muzzle to reassure himself. This was starting to sound like the kind of plan that would end up with him dead.

In Wakanda, wolves were never allowed within the terrority, something predating actual written record as just an easily accepted fact. Almost a law in some eyes so it did not surprise him the hostility passed Sam's way. The only thing that did surprise him being the ease with which Sam accepted it and moved forward. It had him questioning plenty of things.

Entering the underground tunnels, a wolf already met him there. The guards set and poised but he waved a hand for them to stand down. Not too long after the change washed over him and a slick panther sat in his place. He regarded the wolf with some interest but took to grooming his paw instead of engaging right away.

With another wolf, Sam might have playfully pounced on him, but he knew that anything that seemed like an attack would be greeted with those spears. Maybe they could play-fight later, although he was positive T'Challa had the advantage over him (by a good fifty pounds, at least, and some incredibly sharp claws).

He rose to his feet and stepped forward cautiously, nuzzling the panther's neck to inhale his scent. It was unfamiliar and familiar at the same time, instantly identifiable as the man he'd been sparring with earlier that day. Sam bared his teeth in a doglike smile, then licked T'Challa's muzzle, huffing his amusement as his tail wagged.

Allowing the scenting, he stayed relatively still, wondering what Sam thought of it given how different they were to one another. Many species did not enjoy the scent of another but Sam tended to be an exception to many rules. The licking showing that all too clearly.

Huffing and shaking, he leaned forward to scent Sam in return, sneezing a little in response. But he didn't fully dislike it or anything. Interesting. He refrained from licking and instead took off running suddenly to see what Sam would do.

Maybe Sam didn't mind other species as much because he was lonely - wolves were inherently social animals, and he'd been alone ever since he'd been changed. Even the company of a panther was welcome (and, really, he didn't find T'Challa's scent offensive, just different). This was someone who understood what he was, someone he didn't have to hide part of himself from, and it was a relief.

But then the panther started running, and Sam let out an excited yip. This was what he'd really been waiting for. He shook himself for a moment before he started running after T'Challa. The cat had an advantage over short distances, but Sam knew he could run longer.

The thrill of running rushed through him, a kind of freedom he never found in human form with all the weighted expectations pressing down onto him. There were so many times he wished for things to be different but knew they couldn't be. His lot in life had been assigned since birth but moments like the present one gave another edge to things. It made him grateful.

Just as Sam anticipated, T'challa suddenly stopped running and leapt to turn around. What might happen now?

When T'Challa changed direction, so did Sam - but instead of running straight, he kept looping in a wide circle around the panther. He knew that stopping would offer T'Challa a target, so he kept moving. As he did, he opened his mouth in the wolf's equivalent of a grin, his tongue lolling out. If there was one thing every canine loved deep down (or not so deep), it was a good chase.

Continuing to run around, he stayed very aware of the wolf looping and dashing around behind him. Non felines were do undignified and wild but he couldn't really fault them for what they were born with. They just needed closer instruction to try and become better than what they were. After a few more broad circles, he stopped suddenly and tried to leap and pounce Sam, sans claws for the time being at least. Let's see what kind of reflexes and skills the wolf had.

Though Sam nearly dodged the panther, T'Challa's paws landed on his hindquarters and brought him to the ground. He huffed and rolled over underneath the greater weight, squirming to try and escape. His slick fur made it difficult to find purchase without claws involved, and after a few moments, Sam wriggled free again, yipping excitedly. He obviously found this to be great fun, and after a few moments, he leapt for the panther.
