Bascomb has been sitting there long enough to doze a little, the exertion of the hours spent fighting the blaze catching up with him. But he wakes quickly at the signs of consciousness from the man in the bed.
"Hey, hold up there, now." His tone is soft and tinged with the fluid lilt of the Southern mountains, as he admonishes the man into stillness and picks up the glass for him. There's a straw lying next to it, left there by the nurse, and Bascomb drops it into the water before moving to lean over the bed and hold the drink for him. "Take it slow, you got a lungful of smoke and ash. Lucky you didn't get worse."
The man doesn't smell like a wolf, so it's unclear what the hell he was doing out in the woods when he should have evacuated, but that's a question for another time. "Bascomb Payne. I'm a smokejumper; my team was out there fighting the fire when you wandering out of the trees and practically fell at our feet."
Deciding to comply for once, he let the guy fuss with the water and offer it to him, making sure to not drink too fast or too much at once. He had been injured enough in his life to know how to care for himself in the aftermath. Having someone else there to help being a drastic change from the usual state of his life. Why, though? The guy really didn't have to stay to wait for him to wake up when the nurses when have informed him if he woke up or not. The latter being far too close this time around.
"Thank you for saving me," Chris rasped out, voice still thin from all the smoke he inhaled. Settling back on the bed, he tried to piece together things in his foggy mind. There were so many things just out of his reach but he knew he needed to heal quicker to get back out there. The trail from the hunter group would be lost soon and he couldn't let that happen when they were torturing too many. Even going as far as killing kids.
"Were - are the others safe? There were two groups in the woods out there," Chris continued, exhaustion already yanking at him. He had gotten too old for all of this. "There were some children...."
