Sam sat down next to him, smiling to herself at the stubborn admission. The two of them were a fine pair, constantly trying to out-stubborn each other. She took the blanket that was folded across the end of the bed and tucked it around both of them. At least they'd be able to generate enough body heat to stay warm like this.

"Wouldn't be over here if I hadn't done this," Sam pointed out by way of an answer. Of course, that was obvious; neither of them would be anywhere near the front without the serum. Sam would have been stuck flying stunts for the Civil Air Patrol, and Steve would have been rejected from the draft entirely. They had both agreed to the project because they'd wanted to make a difference in the war - and, difficulties aside, that's what they were doing. Theoretically, anyway. "Although I will say that this weather makes me miss summer in Alabama." And she hadn't thought that was possible.

If he moved a little closer to Sam, well, it couldn't be helped and if commented on he'd just claim he wanted to make sure she had enough of the blanket to not be cold. Fighting back a yawn, he nodded his head. "We're making a difference even if it's slow going. Would'a been different if they managed more soldiers before-" He trailed off because they both knew what happened and how nothing could be done to change any of it. The serum was lost for good and they were the only two products of it.

"Sometimes it doesn't feel like this war is ever gonna end. You think 'bout going back home? Might see one if those summers again." On Steve's end, he never really considered going back home, only really thinking of how else he could help out with the serumed abilities. He had to make a difference as much as he could.

"Don't really fit in there anymore." Sam shrugged. She wasn't sure she fit in much of anywhere, truth be told. "It'll always be home, but it's not...it's not a place where I can stay." Not in the South, certainly, when plenty of folk had made it clear how they felt about a black woman doing the things she did.

"All I wanna do is help people," she added. "Whatever someone like me can do. I feel like this happened to us for a reason, you know? So I gotta use this however I can to make things better for people - here or back home." She wasn't sure how she would go about helping people back home; in the war, there was a clear goal, a strategy. You could go around punching Nazis in the face, and that solved a lot of things. Defeating things like segregation was harder, and Sam couldn't punch racists on American soil (unfortunately).
