underworld brainstorming post.
I thought we could all toss ideas and then I'll make a prettier post with all the outline and details.
BASICS:
Everyone is tethered to Adder and in extension Ros. And they all connect then to the Underworld as a whole. Everyone can be summoned back to the Underworld by shadows and just pop. Everyone has a strand that is in the underworld who connect to those two.
STATUSES:
Adder.
The Council. This is made up of all the advisors who help run things and lookout for everything in the Underworld. Leader of each section below has a seat on the Council.
The Judges. Help judge the souls.
Bas / Ros.
The Hounds. Divided into packs of 6 and each pack has a pack leader. A scale is in place from newly minted to skillful to veterans.
Furies / Angelics. Furies are in groups of 3 and Angelics in groups of 4. The former punishes and the latter blesses.
The Furies: avenged crimes against the natural order of the world. They would inflict madness upon the living murderer, or if a nation was harboring such a criminal, the Erinyes would cause starvation and disease to the nation.
Angelics: meanwhile bless and bring miracles.
Reapers. Collect the souls, give them to the hounds to bring to the judgement hall.
Staff. Those who cook, tidy up etc.
Daemons.
Eurynomos. the pet daemon and eats all the flesh from corpses to free the spirits during judgements.
Associated. Hermes. Charon. Thanatos. Anubus. Nyx. Achlys.
TRADITIONS:
The Grand Feast. Celebrates a harvest and proper wild hunt. The biggest celebration and where everyone indulges plenty.
The Mingle. Where all those employed get together and it's a party of sorts.
Open Counsel. Once a month and everyone can bring concerns and talk to Adder. And usually Ros. If he's paying attention.
Feasts. Once a month and for all employed to dine together.
Something here resembling a holiday.
Death Days. Like birthdays but celebrates the day you died.
Death parade. Their version of like a festival.
JUDGEMENTS:
Everyone enters the Judgement Hall, which is on the ground level and their hearts are weighed against the feather of truth. If blessed, they go to one of the nicer places. If evil, they're tormented. If conflicted, their heart is eaten and they're cast back to earth as a spirit / ghoul until they work things out.
HUNTS:
Once a year there's the Wild Hunt, where tons of souls are collected and harvested. Usually as a means to keep the balances. There are beings that need to feed and are controlled this way.
Collections. Those trying to cheat and evade death in whatever way.
Regular hunts.
LAYOUT:
There are 5 rivers.
The Styx is generally considered to be one of the most prominent and central rivers of the Underworld and is also the most widely known out of all the rivers. Circles the underworld 7 times.
The Acheron is the river of pain. It's the one that Charon, also known as the Ferryman, rows the dead over.
The Lethe is the river of forgetfulness.
The Phlegethon is the river of fire. Leads to the depths of Tartarus.
The Cocytus is the river of wailing.
The souls that enter the Underworld carry a coin under their tongue to pay Charon to take them across the river. Charon may make exceptions or allowances for those visitors carrying a certain Golden Bough.
Close to the doors are many beasts, including Centaurs, Gorgons, the Lernaean Hydra, the Chimera, and Harpies.
THE AREAS:
Tartarus
Where the evil and wicked are. Doing labors and paying for their sins and misdeeds. It's a place of terrible agony and sectioned off. Ruled over by Levi.
Needs to be expanded. Sections etc.
The Asphodel Meadows
was a place for ordinary or indifferent souls who did not commit any significant crimes, but who also did not achieve any greatness or recognition that would warrant them being admitted to the Elysian Fields. Ruled over by .
Also section for broken hearts.
Elysium
was a place for all the just and who pass judgement. It was ruled over by Rhadamanthus, and the souls that dwelled there had an easy afterlife and had no labors.
The Fortunate Isles or Isles of the Blessed were islands in the realm of Elysium. When a soul achieved Elysium, they had a choice to either stay in Elysium or to be reborn. If a soul was reborn three times and achieved Elysium all three times, then they were sent to the Isles of the Blessed to live in eternal paradise.
Here there is bliss. Eating, drinking, merriment. Even sex and marriages can happen. And it produces no children!
Only happiness and it's paradise. A special section for heroes where it's even nicer. A special island for them.
OTHER:
Adder and Ros' wing. Only those invited can even find it but can send Ravens to try and summon them. Includes bedroom chambers, study, library, baths chamber, own kitchen hall.
Dining Hall. Has no ending.
Kitchens.
Library.
Study rooms / private rooms.
Housing.
Baths chambers.
CONNECTION:
Incubus / Succubus, Dark witches.
OUTSIDE THE UNDERWORLD.
Blue. Queen of the gods. Is in charge of Mount Olympus. Uses birds for communication. Which include faes,
Don. Ruler of the Seas. Which contain: mermaids/men, selkie, sirens, kelpies.
