The smile made his heart flutter right in his chest, which usually never happened to him. Sure, with Peggy he had serious butterflies but something had been off, a disappointment since they weren't soulmates but at least she felt it too. They decided to go their separate ways even before the plane crashed into the water but he still cared for her deeply and always would.

"Why aren't you one of the Avenger people?" Steve asked in his usual blunt manner and without thinking twice about voicing such a thing. It might be a sore topic or something he shouldn't know yet.

Walk briskly and look like he knew things - easy enough. For someone who knew how to look lowkey, perhaps. But Steve? He always stuck out, never too comfortable or sure in his own skin whatsoever.

They were making it close to the exit before suddenly Fury stepped in front of them, looking thoroughly annoyed at both of them.

"What is HE doing out of bed?" Fury asked, leveling a glare at Tony before adding in, "And what do you think you're doing?"

Steve stepped forward a little, trying to muster up his most charming smile possible. "I've always had anxiety attacks and Tony here was helping me work off one. It helps to walk around but I think being outside might help the most. Fresh air and space. Kinda been locked away for awhile -" He tried to look as pitiful as possible and for some reason it worked, Fury gave a nod and jabbed a thumb in the direction of the exit. Success!

[ Negotiating his own terms, really? What even gave Frank the idea he had any power to do so? If Steve really wanted to, he could bring him into the headquarters for a few days of lock up. The SHIELD lock ups were notoriously terrible but better than the RAFT in the very least. Glare resting on his face, Steve shook his head. ]

Not if I decide to bring the guy in and call in reinforcements to do so. [ Frank's trigger happy approach to life really needed to cool down. Not everyone needed to meet some untimely death and besides death happened to be too quick for some scumbags. They deserved to stew in their own misery for years and years. Frank offered some the quickest way out but he probably saw it differently, as some form of personal vendetta justice.

But no. ]

How about we try this again? [ He leveled a look at Frank. ] Hello, Frank. You're going to help me find the fugitive I was after and then you're going to leave him with me. Alive. Whatever you do out of my sight is on you but as long as we are together, you are not going to just randomly kill people!

Whatever he might have said in response to the question was pretty quickly blown away by Fury's appearance, and Tony only barely managed not to choke on a laugh as Steve all but turned on the bambi eyes. The fact that it actually worked surprised him as much as anyone. Either Fury was turning into a soft touch, or he had some other plan he was running. Didn't matter, Tony could deal with it later.

He didn't, however, manage to resist throwing a quick salute Fury's way, though he stepped through the door before he had time to see the reaction. He probably didn't want to know anyway.

"So that's you sprung," he said as he slipped his sunglasses on in deference to the sudden wash of sunlight and turned to face Steve. "Where to, Dillinger?"

[ Loss pooled within Clarke and it caused an ache nearly deep enough to swallow her whole and prevent her from standing back up. But no matter how many things knocked her down, Clarke found a way to keep going and to protect those around her. At the moment, her people were lost and believing the ravings of a madman. The adults were not on the ground from the beginning and saw the grounders way of life as more of a threat than the original 100. Fear motivated in such dark ways and Pike had taken advantage of it all to complete his vendetta.

She understood to a point - ice nation slaughtered their people but it didn't mean all grounders were like that. And now innocent grounders were dead.

Blood must have blood. ]

Finn was one of us. [ The words were spoken softly; pained in every possible way. The guilt she felt about Finn never really left her alone and she constantly thought about how things could have been different had she made other choices. ]

They're rallying around Pike but he isn't one of them. Not really. They just need to see that again. See that he is manipulating their fear.

[ Looking down at Lexa, her words felt like thousands of cuts all over her body. Did Lexa really want her to leave? It sure sounded like it and it hurt more than she thought it would.

Love is weakness.

But she didn't believe that. Not really. ]

There's not a lot I can do, Lexa. I'm going to be seen as an enemy on both sides now. The coalition is - it's ruined now and that plus Pike put my people at risk. While my people will see me as a turncoat.

Fresh air greeted him soon after and Steve stopped to take in huge lungfuls. It felt like so long since he last stepped outside and while nothing made sense around him it still felt solid. The ebb and flow of the ocean waves were left far behind but the haunt of them continued to wash over him. It would probably be a long time before he stopped feeling so cold, a more psychological feature than a physical one or so claimed the nurse when he asked about it.

Looking over at Tony, Steve gave a faint smile. "I'm not really sure where I'm supposed to be staying now. Never really got to that point. I don't -" He waved a hand over himself. "Have anything but the clothes on my back right now." To think he owned less than in his childhood.

"I think they said I have money in the bank already? I could find a place to stay," he continued in a ramble, already feeling a little overwhelmed in a real way. The nurse explained about post traumatic something or another but he had zoned out during her explanation on it. "You probably - have a lot to do - if you could just point me in the direction I need to go -" He trailed off with a lost look running over his face.

"Right," Tony said after a moment or so of letting Steve babble, and then promptly began herding him towards the very nice car parked mostly-legally at the curb. They probably could have walked it, wasn't that far to the tower, but Steve was already looking more than a little done with everything and the twisty place in his chest that Tony was doing his best to ignore had started to hurt. So. This was something Tony could fix.

"What's your opinion on pizza?" He asked suddenly once he'd gotten them both settled into the car. "I mean pizza is pizza, but I don't know, you might have feelings on the matter. Or be one of those pineapple people. That's just wrong." Tony might have been babbling himself, just a little, but if there was anything he could do without thinking, it was fill the silence.

Handy too, since there was a lot going on in Tony's head. Steering them through Midtown traffic only took up a bit of attention which meant that he had more than enough brainpower to devote to figuring out exactly what to do about this whole soulmate thing. Steve hadn't mentioned anything, was he just too overpowered by everything else to deal with it? ...did he not know? That was a conversation he did not think he was prepared to have.

But soon enough, he was pulling into the Tower's garage. It occurred, possibly too late, that he probably should have warned Steve where they were going, but hey. The man seemed uncertain.

"You can head somewhere else after we feed you," Tony told him as he climbed out of the car. "If you want. I can take you pretty much anywhere. Just figured you could use somewhere to get your head together a bit."

[ It feels strange, for the man to be reassuring Matt that he'll have his privacy again soon. As if it's his house, as if he has any memory of the time that passed between his death and the appearance of the soldiers there now. What if he just goes dormant again once they leave?

What if he doesn't, and he's doomed to wander the old rooms alone forever? ]

You aren't bothering me any, sir.

[ He wishes he had a name of some kind to refer to, a rank if nothing else. It seems so impersonal to think about the man as just some unknown officer. He has orders and a mission, men to look after. He has an identity. Too many soldiers have already disappeared into time without leaving a name behind. ]

Been a while for me, too. [ Matt can't help the little joke, and the quirk of a smile that forms below the bandages covering his eyes. ] I can listen, I don't mind, if you feel like talking. Not like I can spill any secrets. But I, uh- I was wondering if you would tell me your name.

[ Talk about forgetting manners in his exhausted riddled mind. There were just so many things to take care of and for some reason the title of Captain had fallen onto his shoulders, JUST because of the entire serum ordeal. No matter what happened, he never really earned the rank as he should have and it constantly bothered him. Would he have earned it in the natural course of service or would he have been found unfit for the role? Sometimes, he wondered if he really had what it took to be an actual leader. ]

My manners could use a talking to. Steve Rogers and you can just call me Steve. [ He offered a faint smile, slowly resting back against the wall and the pillows. Sleeping should have come easily for him but he felt too on edge to really give into it. Besides, what if something happened? He needed to keep alert for his men and women. ]

I don't think I really have any secrets. I mean, besides what got me into the army in the first place. I wasn't entirely honest there but it worked out in the end. [ A moral grey area at best and downright illegal at worst. ]

Guess they can't get me for insubordination, can they?

[ Matt can tell from the accent that he's talking to a fellow New Yorker, and there's something about switching off the military persona that makes him feel more relaxed. He's never really been comfortable with it anyway. Although he supposes that's who he is for good, now. ]

Just Matt, then. You're from...Brooklyn, aren't you? It's nice to hear the accent again. [ Every one of his comrades-in-arms was from the city, a mishmash of Bronx and Manhattan, Queens and Harlem. A little bit of home away from home. ]

You enlisted? That's brave of you. Me, I was drafted. Most of us guys were.

[ For the first time in a long time, Steve actually laughed and it felt out of place nearly. There weren't many things to laugh or smile about in the middle of a war zone and he took so much on his shoulders. Far more than any person should actually be able to handle, super soldier or not. But he refused to let anyone else into the grief if he could take it for his own. ]

I am. You've got a good ear for accents huh? [ The smile remained on his face. ] Where were you from? Something New York, right? [ Accents were a little trickier for him. ]

[ He gave a nod of his head, belatedly realising Matt wouldn't be able to see with the bandages. How did that work with being a ghost? ] My best friend got drafted and well I couldn't be. I wasn't eligible for enlisting but that didn't stop me from trying. Did everything I could to get here. Everyone else was risking their lives and I had no right to not do the same.

Even the car seemed so different from the ones he used to see on the streets in his time period. Although, Howard's creations were a little futuristic - the whole flying car aspect. Eventually, he needed to start considering the current era as his own but he doubted he would ever get there. The disconnect lingered and he didn't know how to really rid himself of it. For now, he wanted to focus on having a place to stay and something to eat. Hopefully, somewhere warm and dry, far away from anything water-like. Even the thought of a bath made anxiety claw at his insides and scattered memories throughout his mind.

Images he knew would haunt him for the rest of his life.

Pizza? "I like pizza. Never had pineapple. People put fruit on pizza?" He shook his head at just the thought. "Always been a classics kind of fella - pepperoni and cheese. What about you?" Pizza preferences - were they becoming friends or what? "Tried peppers once and nearly didn't make it that night. I don't think I'd be able to try them again."

They arrived at a really large building and with wide eyes Steve looked over at Tony. "You live here? Or is this where you're -" He trailed off when Tony began speaking again. Okay, apparently, he must live in the building or at least stay there in some capacity.

How caregiving - completely different than what he remembered Howard being like. "Thank you. I mean - for all of this. Who do I need to talk to about staying here?" Climbing out of the car, he shut the door carefully to not accidentally rip it off its hinges. It happened far too easy but he still needed to practice with his abilities.

[ Matt practically glows at hearing that laughter, proud that he could provide even a brief moment of levity. It's probably inappropriate, but he doesn't care. Sometimes laughter is the only way to get through the hell of war. ]

I've always liked to listen to things -- people talking, all the things going on around the city. And it seems like I hear things with a little more clarity now. Not sure why. [ He nods, grinning. ] Hell's Kitchen.

[ Steve's story makes him feel a little guilty, but his respect for the man grows. Real respect, not just what rank demands. His smile fades, though, as recent memories overtake older, more pleasant ones. ] You're a better man than me. I wouldn't have...this isn't really what I'd have picked for myself. [ Unconsciously, he clenches his fist against the phantom of a tremor that followed him out of the Argonne. ]

[ There were certain sounds Steve longed for but knew he wouldn't find in the middle of a battlefield, such as the noise of the city and the scratching noise of a pen against paper. A thumbing heartbeat lulling him to sleep at night, something he missed most of all. But gone were the days he needed to take extra care to even make it through until morning. Most health risks were completely taken care of. ]

Did you always hear really well or did that come from - [ He trailed off, not wanting to hurt Matt or make him talk about something he'd rather not.

Hell's Kitchen. A little ways from where he grew up, then. ]

If you ask anyone in my life, they'd just say I was stupid. Stupid and stubborn. [ But he preferred to think of it as determined. ] What did you want to do instead? I mean if you weren't drafted? Or if you - [ Made it home. ]

I've always had good hearing, but it's...different, now. I hear things that I don't think anyone normally can. [ He has no idea if it's a compensation that began when he lost his sight, or if it's all part of being a spirit. Not that it really matters, he supposes. ]

Is there really that much distance between brave and stupid? [ He tilts his head toward the stairs. ] They're not griping about you down there. They sound loyal. Tells me which side of the line you fall on.

[ Matt's head bows at the question. Like speculation about his senses, does it really make any difference what his plans were before the war came for him? ] I was thinking about trying to get into college. I wanted- I wanted to be a lawyer.

Tony glanced up from where he had his phone out, letting JARVIS know to put in an order at the regular place -- and to lay low for a bit. Give Steve a little chance to get himself together before he started springing AIs on him. Not something he would have usually done, even for someone who had the context to even start recognizing what JARVIS was, but the lost look in Steve's eyes was...it bothered him. Enough to not want to make it worse.

"I've got an in with the landlord," he said, not really bothering to hide the amusement in his voice. "Come on." And he turned to head towards the elevator, assuming Steve would follow.

He was quiet as the elevator opened and they both slipped inside, but once they started the long trail upwards, it was hard to ignore the amount of tension in the tiny box. "So there's a lot we probably have to talk about," Tony said finally, leaning back against one of the walls to look at Steve. "But I figure it probably won't hurt to feed you first."

The coalition is not ruined. [There are a thousand things she wants to point out - Finn was not "one of them", for starters, they had sent him down to die just like everyone else Clarke had come down with. That fear was quick to gather a following and harder to dismiss.

Maybe even tempt Clarke with the prospect of being able to fetch her mother back to properly heal this strange new wound that burned in her side even with the object removed.

Instead, she tries to sit up more, wincing at every little degree she manages to sit up.

She grabs for Clarke's hand, to hold onto her. For whose comfort, Lexa's not entirely sure but the feeling steadies her heart and makes it easier to ignore the burning pain.]

As long as I live, the Coalition will stand. I will see to that. I have seen to it since my ascension... [Or, well, since she made the coalition a true thing, since she forced the others into alignment. Even Azgeda mostly played along, until it didn't, but she dealt with them as well.]

Your people are my people. They are all our people. They must understand.

We are in this together, Clarke. [Despite her own actions, they had been in this together for what felt like a much longer time than it was.]

[Of course Rogers has to go and use the reinforcements threat. Frank's distaste is evident enough in the form of a glare. If this was up to him he'd just debilitate the Captain with a bullet to a couple knees or thighs and move on, but Frank can't make himself do it. Not to him. Not even that much.

God fucking damn it.

He's still tense as he keeps a distance, jaw clenched. Steve did mention as long as they're together though. That won't be forever.]

[She weaves her illusions well.

What seems like the tragic sinking of his ship and the drowning of all aboard he might have called comrades in the midst of a terrible storm is nothing more than just that. Her magic is powerful, enough to make him think that they're all dead, that there's no way to reach them or save them, while in truth the ship is wrestled by the crew's expert hands away from the island, out of the worst of the storm and away.

Each person on board believing the Prince lost.

She's long since been able to harden her heart, to steel herself to use such tactics. They're deceitful, yes, but better than truly condemning all on board to death. If the man ever discovers what she's done he'll know at least that she's not a murderer, that she's not so far gone as to kill a hundred men just to bring one to her island.

Looking at him now with sympathy, unfeigned in this at least, she watches his shoulders slump. Sees the hope die and the grief settle in.

Breathing heavily, she turns her gaze then to the illusion, to the violent waves that seem to swallow what's left of a broken ship, and the last broken cries of the crew. Her head drops as she catches her breath, fingers curling into the sand as she sits not far from where he stands.]

You'll kill yourself if you try to go out there. [The wind of her storm blows through her wet hair as she lifts her face once more.] The waves...I nearly went under myself trying to get to you.

[ Hope bloomed deep within her but she knew better than to grasp onto it too strongly because things often changed in a single instant. Anytime she found sure footing, something darted out in front of her to make her stumble. This time around she nearly lost Lexa and the ache in her heart remained, growing in depth each time she caught a wince or a sputter of breath. Just because she removed the bullet and treated the wound did not guarantee anything. An infection could still happen or a fever of some sort. There were far too many worst case scenarios and yet Lexa wanted her to leave. ]

Things are going to be different now, Lexa, and you know it. My people slaughtered an innocent clan. A clan there to protect them. The other clans aren't going to let that go. [ Not that she expected them to because Pike made the wrong decision and only heightened the fear and unease between the ark and the grounders. ]

[ Raising Lexa's hand, she pressed a messy kiss along her palm, resting her lips against the pulse point for a moment. ] I'm not sure what to do Lexa. There are so many who buy into what Pike believes. They put him in charge. I don't know where that leaves Kane or anyone else. [ The worry for her people grew by the minute as well. ]

You aren't safe, Lexa, they are going to question your reign. They are going to demand blood for what happened. Blood must not have blood will not work now. It won't.

[ How would it feel to lose so much time and not have any way of making it up? To not have any way to grasp onto another chance of life? Each soldier knew they might never return home but they always held onto the hope they would. That the war would end and they would see their loved ones. They would return to a life waiting for them.

But for Matt, he would never have the chance, how unfair life could be.

All in the pursuit for freedom too.

Slowly resting back onto the bed, Steve nodded his head against the pillows. He moved to lay on his side to look at Matt. ]

They're really good men. Hope all of them get to make it out of this. [ He paused for a moment to adjust into a more comfortable position. ] I wanted to - do something with art maybe. It's always been an outlet but never any time for it now. Never really time for anything.

Along with the constant cold feeling, Steve also felt an unease within his skin as if he never acclimated to the bulkier frame at all. When he first received the serum, it took some time to come to terms with all the changes - being taller, broader and more agile. A dream come true for a punk kid from Brooklyn who never thought he'd make it to his thirtieth birthday. But anytime he looked in the mirror he still saw himself from before the serum and there were moments it sent a different sort of ache within him. Body image problems were only the tip of the iceberg.

Following after Tony, Steve shoved his hands in his pockets, another shiver working up and down his spine. What he wouldn't give for a nice warm quilt and a cup of hot chocolate. He moved into the elevator carefully, trying to not take up too much space for Tony to have enough room.

"About the Avengers or something else?" Steve asked, eyes watching the numbers dinging on their way up. "They wanted me to meet the team this weekend, I think." The team they wanted him to suddenly lead without even knowing them. With the Commandos at least it slowly built up before suddenly they named him in charge. Plus, he had Bucky.

Bucky. His heart pained with guilt and remorse so thick he nearly drowned in it too.

[ Pain settled like a drifting current and it kept yanking him under wave after wave to nearly drown in the grief surrounding him. The ones he considered family were gone, settling into unmarked graves to davey jones' locker. How could he survive when they hadn't? Shivering from the chill and also from the loss, Steve buried his face in his sandy hands. Slowly, he sank to his knees along the shore, the waves lapping at him but he barely felt it. What would he tell their families? Well, first off, how would he make it off the island to tell anyone anything? He didn't even know his current location and it would take some time for others to send a rescue ship to look for them.

What if they never did? What if no one ever came out?

The sound of a voice startled him because he forgot about the one who saved him fro a moment. Shifting to look at her, he gave a jerk nod of his head. But a single thought occurred to him. ]

Why me? Out of everyone you could save - why did you pick me? [ There were plenty of stronger men on board, far better men in Steve's eyes. Ones who deserved life and breathing much more than he did. ] But I mean - thank you. That was - a big risk you took.

[ Always so pleasant encountering Frank Castle. Steve really had no idea why he never spent more time around the sunshiney man. With a roll of his eyes, he allowed Frank to stalk out in front of him and pick up the trail the other man left behind. Hunting and tracking happened to be one of his weaker points but he usually managed well enough if absolutely needed. The skill set happened to be one of Frank's best, though, according the records SHIELD kept on him.

Frank apparently had a lot of skills with just as many hangups. But who didn't? They were all messed up in some way. ]

You don't have to kill anyone is the point. You could turn them over. [ He shook his head. ] One day, you're not going to make it out of one of your self appointed missions alive. You deal with the scum of the earth, Frank, and sooner or later it consumes you too.

"About a lot of things."

Tony hadn't quite been watching him, or at least had been trying to pretend he hadn't been, but he still registered the moment something shifted in Steve. Some dark feeling sweeping up, and Tony already found himself shifting unconsciously closer even before he felt and echo of something twist into the space behind his reactor.

He hesitated for just a second, then carefully reached up to set a hand on Steve's shoulder. Careful to keep only on the material of his shirt, not quite ready to deal with skin contact yet. But he left it there, a gentle warm pressure, and nudged at him as the elevator doors finally opened into the penthouse.

"Can I get you anything?" He asked as he moved past him into the space, trying to ignore the fact that he was already missing the contact.
