When it came to his friends, Steve would do anything to help them and be with them. Case and point - the lengths they were going through to be with Bucky on full moons. He found it worth it, of course, and had confidence in their abilities. They had carefully brewed the potion and now just needed to complete the steps necessary for the transformation. He wondered what form his animagus would take since it dealt with a person's inner self. What would his animal say about him?
Looking over at Sam, he offered a smile, fingers reaching out to take a hold of the vial. "We have gone over this so many times. Nothing is going to go wrong, okay." He moved around to get into position. "I'll go first and if something does go wrong get yourself out of here, okay?"
"Oh, yeah, like that's gonna happen," Sam scoffed. If something went wrong, he'd be right there with Steve, trying to help him as best he could. It was what Steve would do for him in the same situation, and Sam wouldn't do anything less.
So he took a couple steps back and held his wand at the ready, waiting for Steve to drink the potion and hoping nothing went wrong. It wasn't that he didn't believe in their abilities (although Potions wasn't his strongest subject), just that there was a lot of room to go wrong here. Far more experienced wizards had tried to do this and failed. But he wasn't going to abandon his friends when they needed him.
The process for becoming an animagus took a long time and even if they completed all the steps so far there were still so many things that could go wrong. Steve read plenty of horror stories about others becoming lost between the two states of human and animal, something no one could change. The possibility if something going wrong didn't make him want to stop, though, they were doing it for Bucky so he wouldn't have to be alone during his monthly problems. It would be okay; they would make it out into the other side just fine. Gripping for the potion, he let out a slow breath, trying to clear everything from his mind except for the incantation and the distant sound of the thunderstorm.
Now or never.
Pulsing it down, he quickly said the words over and over, the shift slowly taking over him. Nearly in a slow motion kind of ordeal but when everything settled, an animal form sat where Steve once stood. He had taken the form of a: dog sitting there looking up at Sam with bright blue eyes and golden fur.
"You're a dog." Sam stared at Steve incredulously for a moment before he started laughing. "Of course you're a dog." He crouched down and rubbed behind Steve's ears for a moment, enjoying the soft feeling of his fur. (Was it weird to pet his best friend? Probably.) The motion helped calm him a little, and after another couple of minutes, he stood up again and looked at his own vial of potion.
He murmured the incantation for the last time, drinking the potion down in one long gulp. For a moment, everything was still, and then the entire world grew larger and larger around him. Before long, he was looking up at Steve, his head cocked slightly to one side. His vision magnified everything, and he could see every hair on the dog's muzzle clearly. When he opened his mouth to speak, nothing came out but a shrill squawk.
Cocking his head to the side, Steve looked slightly offended, at least as much as a dog could look put out. The look didn't last long, the getting feeling too good and he leaned into it happily, tail wagging to show how okay he found it. It might be a little weird but he didn't linger long on questioning any of it. His eyes focused again as Sam shifted into - a bird.
Of course. It made perfect sense.
Gripping onto his humanity anchor, Steve shifted back with a groan, fingers clumsily reaching out for his robe to slip on. "I knew you'd be something like a bird," Steve commented as he sat down. "You don't look very cuddly, just so you know."
He fought back a yawn, the shifting taken more out of him than he expected but it had been a long couple of months.
